Welcome to the 'www' home of the UNSW Electricity Restructuring Group, or ERGO. This informal discussion and research collaboration group focuses on research into electricity restructuring, from the operation of the Electricity markets here in Australia and elsewhere, emerging power technologies, through to wider questions of appropriate energy policy directions and electricity industry sustainability.

Latest news

UNSW’s Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM): This recently established multi-disciplinary research centre is an initiative of the Faculties of Engineering and Commerce and Economics. It will bring together researchers in UNSW and partner organisations with the key objective of providing Australian research leadership in the interdisciplinary design, analysis and performance monitoring of energy and environmental markets and their associated policy frameworks.

ERGO researchers have some key roles in CEEM – Associate Professor Hugh Outhred is a Joint Centre Director while Karel Nolles is Research Coordinator (Economics) and Iain MacGill is Research Coordinator (Engineering). The Centre website is now under construction – see www.ceem.unsw.edu.au.

Email list: Would you like to receive email updates from CEEM with announcements of forthcoming events and newly posted papers? We expect that these emails will average one or two a month. Your email address will not be released to any other party. If you'd like to sign up please send an email message to majordomo@explode.unsw.edu.au with a one line message -  ‘subscribe ceem-update’  or ‘unsubscribe ceem-update’ as appropriate.

Please contact Iain MacGill if you have any questions regarding CEEM or problems with its website or email list: i.macgill@unsw.edu.au.

Note that we expect to slowly wind down use of the ERGO email list. Due to privacy laws we are not permitted to transfer existing ergo email subscribers automatically over to the new CEEM list – existing subscribers who wish to continue to receive updates should now subscribe to CEEM.

Research

The Electricity Industry in Australia and worldwide is currently being transformed by:

Industry restructuring with the introduction of competitive electricity markets

New renewable and other small-scale clean generation technologies, and

Growing environmental concerns.

The Electricity Restructuring Group at UNSW is exploring the many technical and policy related questions arising from this transformation.

Electricity Industry Restructuring

The restructuring process underway here in Australia has introduced electricity markets and competition into the industry. This has raised a wide range of questions involving engineering, economics and policy:

Design of electricity spot & derivative markets to incorporate appropriate industry models

Design of "ancillary services" for voltage and frequency control

Creation of a "level playing field" for more sustainable energy systems, such as those based on solar, wind or biomass

Renewable Energy Systems

Many renewable and small-scale clean energy technologies show great promise, but they do raise important technical questions for the electricity grid:

Standards for safety, interconnection and protection

Power electronics and quality of supply

System simulation, analysis, design and control

Implementation of systems in remote communities

Growing environmental concerns

The need for our society to act on global warming by reducing fossil fuel use is near universally accepted.

At present, greater than 90% of Australian electricity comes from coal fired plant. Electricity accounts for 38% of Australia's total CO2 emissions. There are important research questions regarding the most appropriate policies to move the electricity industry towards greater sustainability.
